Uniting the rural and the streamlined wasn’t the main exercise in careful control engineer Don Ziebell and creator Inga L. Rehmann, of Oz Architects, pulled off in this Provençal-roused kitchen in another Scottsdale, Arizona, home. The customers are vacant nesters who needed the kitchen to feel “comfortable everyday, except extensive when they engaged,” Rehmann says. By fitting the neighboring morning room and structure to oblige substantial gatherings, the kitchen “could remain imply. It’s the best of the two universes,” the fashioner says.
Outside Exchange
Sourced in France, recovered oak roof pillars “convey a true vibe to space,” Ziebell says. Likewise including a French inflection: limestone from Provence for the counters and floor tiles.
To supplement the light tiles and counters, Ziebell included a natural vibe with the stone dividers. Privately quarried fieldstone mirrors the stonework of farmhouses. Applying a mortar wash blended with site earth relaxed the shades of the stones and increased the coarseness. With the finished dividers, Ziebell needed the cupboards to be a “calm, saved minute.”
Blended Textures
Reminiscent of a bar top in a brasserie, the poured-pewter island will take on a patina after some time as the surface changes from pale silver to a dull dim. Alongside the modern zinc of the pendants, pewter differentiates the smooth stainless steel Wolf convection steam broiler and Sub-Zero icebox.
Since the customers don’t have some family-measure suppers, Rehmann shrank the impression of the island and transformed the space into a discussion region. The wingback seats “are a comfortable spot for them to taste beverages and talk,” she says. The 1800s Spanish trestle table doesn’t have a French family, yet Rehmann couldn’t avoid its unpleasant slashed interest. After paint was peeled off, it was mounted on risers with the first ball feet reattached, boosting it to counter stature.
Additional Light
The antique French collapsing seats can be swapped out for more formal seating or evacuated to change the pine table into a smorgasbord or beverages bar. Great design subtle elements — mud mortar dividers, a Belgian bluestone and limestone floor — won’t conflict with party stylistic theme. The boards of rescued barnwood on the roof are processed level, to tone down the rusticity.

Floor-to-roof Hope’s windows and French entryways make an indoor-open air studio feel. The combo of the thin steel casings and vast scale sheets “isn’t present day or nation. It’s transitional, which functions admirably for in the middle of rooms,” Ziebell says.
Outdoors Partying
Estimated for mingling, the structure picks up dramatization from a 13-foot crested roof with bars indistinguishable to those in the kitchen. A jute floor covering from RH, Restoration Hardware outlines a discussion zone, alongside a couple of Lee Industries couches and teak solid shape stools from Ralph Lauren Home.
An Oz Architects outline, the darkened steel waterfall table offers burger joints an immediate perspective of the culinary activity occurring at the cooking chimney, which can be equipped with a tallness flexible mesh for Argentine-style grill. Antique French hearth blocks shape a specialty for the chimney and the adjacent flame broil from Alfresco.
